Israel Strikes Lebanon, Ceasefire at Risk

A series of devastating Israeli airstrikes across Lebanon, including a 10-minute bombardment of Beirut dubbed "Operation Eternal Darkness," killed over 250 people on Wednesday, with the total death toll since March 2 surpassing 1,700.

The Israeli military has expanded its campaign into residential, mixed-faith neighborhoods in Beirut previously considered safe, claiming Hezbollah fighters are relocating there; Lebanese officials and medical workers report that the vast majority of victims are civilians.

The attacks have placed the two-week-old US-Iran ceasefire under "severe strain," with Tehran and the EU warning that the exclusion of Lebanon from the agreement makes continued negotiations and the truce itself increasingly untenable.

In retaliation for the strikes, Hezbollah launched approximately 30 rockets into northern Israel, while the Lebanese government declared a national day of mourning and condemned the strikes as a breach of international law.

Washington maintains that Lebanon is outside the scope of the current US-Iran deal, a stance that Iran’s President Pezeshkian warned would render further diplomacy "meaningless" if the bombardment of Lebanese territory continues.
