Gas Supply Disrupted in Dehradun and Beyond: A Blow to Commercial Establishments

The recent disruption in gas supply to commercial establishments in Dehradun, a trend observed in other parts of the country, has sent shockwaves through the business community, leaving thousands of hotels, restaurants, dhabas, and street vendors reeling.

The crisis has put the livelihoods of many workers at risk, as these establishments rely heavily on commercial LPG cylinders. To mitigate the situation, the Ministry of Petroleum has implemented a system where businesses must apply for cylinder allotment by emailing the Ministry. A committee will then decide on allocation based on urgency and priority.

However, this process has been met with frustration and confusion among business owners, who have expressed concerns about the lengthy and bureaucratic application process. Educational and healthcare institutions, deemed essential services, have been exempted from this requirement and must apply through the district supply office, where their past consumption records will be verified before approval.

Several institutions, including Graphic Era, Max Hospital, and Welham Girls College, have already submitted applications, highlighting the urgency of the situation. The government's decision to prioritize essential services underscores the importance of maintaining a steady supply of gas to these critical sectors.

Enforcement Efforts: A Crackdown on Misuse and Black Marketing

To curb the misuse and black marketing of LPG cylinders, enforcement teams led by District Supply Officer KK Agarwal conducted raids in areas such as Mianwala, Balawala, Ranjhawala, and Raipur. During these inspections, 65 establishments were checked, and a staggering 37 domestic cylinders were seized for being used illegally for commercial purposes.

The government's efforts to regulate the LPG market are a step in the right direction, aimed at preventing the diversion of cylinders to commercial users, who often exploit the system by using domestic cylinders for business purposes. This practice not only compromises the security of domestic consumers but also leads to a shortage of gas for households.

Implications and Way Forward

The gas supply disruption in Dehradun and other parts of the country highlights the need for a more streamlined and efficient system for commercial LPG cylinder allocation. The current setup, which relies on a manual application process, is prone to delays and corruption, exacerbating the supply shortage.

To address this crisis, the government must consider implementing a more robust and technology-driven system for managing LPG cylinder supplies. This could include online applications, real-time tracking, and a more transparent allocation process. By doing so, the government can ensure a fair and equitable distribution of gas cylinders, meeting the needs of both commercial and domestic consumers.

Ultimately, the gas supply disruption in Dehradun and beyond serves as a wake-up call for the government to revamp its LPG management system, prioritizing the needs of all stakeholders and preventing the exploitation of the system by a few unscrupulous elements.
