Legendary Indian Shooter and Coach Jaspal Rana Passes Away at 49

India's shooting fraternity is in deep mourning following the sudden passing of Jaspal Rana, one of the country's most celebrated sport shooters and coaches. The 49-year-old, who was born on June 28, 1976 in Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand, breathed his last at a hospital in Delhi on the night of June 11, 2026, after suffering a heart attack.

A Legend of the Shooting Range

Jaspal Rana was no ordinary athlete. Over the course of his illustrious career, he became India's most decorated Commonwealth Games competitor in history, having claimed an extraordinary 15 medals — comprising 9 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze — across four editions of the Games in 1994, 1998, 2002, and 2006. His dominance in the 25-metre pistol events made him a household name in Indian sports during the 1990s and 2000s.

His contributions to Indian shooting were recognized at the highest levels. He received the prestigious Arjuna Award in 1994 and the Padma Shri in 1997. In 2020, he was honoured with the Dronacharya Award, acknowledging his exceptional work as a coach and mentor to the next generation of Indian shooters.

The Man Behind India's Champions

Beyond his achievements as a competitor, Jaspal Rana leaves behind an equally remarkable coaching legacy. He is widely credited for shaping the career of Manu Bhaker, who went on to win double bronze medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics — a historic achievement for Indian shooting. Rana served as her coach during a crucial phase of her development, guiding her through the technical and mental demands of elite competition.

Cause of Death

Medical experts have noted that Rana was a "late-stage presenter" — meaning he sought medical attention only after significant heart damage had already occurred. According to doctors, such patients face elevated risks of heart failure, dangerous cardiac arrhythmias, and sudden cardiac arrest even in the weeks following an angioplasty procedure.

His passing has renewed calls for greater awareness around heart attack symptoms and the importance of seeking timely medical care.

Nation Mourns

The news of Rana's passing sent shockwaves through the Indian sports community. Athletes, officials, and fans took to social media to pay tribute to a man who spent his entire life in service of Indian shooting — first as a competitor and then as a builder of champions.

Jaspal Rana is survived by his wife, Aarushie Verma, and his family.

His legacy, however, will live on in every medal won by the shooters he trained, and in the countless young athletes he inspired to pick up a pistol and dream of standing on the world stage.
