A senior government official clarified that no state will lose its current proportional strength in Parliament; instead, the plan is to increase the total number of Lok Sabha seats by 50% across all states.
The INDIA bloc has unanimously decided to oppose the delimitation provisions, labeling them a "political stunt" and "gerrymandering" intended to benefit the ruling party by redrawing constituency boundaries based on the 2011 Census.
Southern states, which have successfully stabilized their populations, fear that a census-based delimitation will dilute their political influence in favor of high-growth northern states.
While the opposition supports the 33% reservation for women, they reject the government’s move to link its implementation to the delimitation process, demanding it be enacted within the current seat structure instead.
