Uttarakhand Roadways to Launch WhatsApp Bus Ticket Booking, Metro-Style

Uttarakhand Roadways to Launch WhatsApp Bus Ticket Booking, Metro-Style

The Uttarakhand Transport Corporation (UTC) is preparing to introduce WhatsApp-based ticket booking, allowing passengers to reserve Roadways bus tickets through a QR-enabled digital system similar to those already used by metro networks. The initiative is being developed in partnership with the National Informatics Centre (NIC), according to UTC General Manager (Operations) Kranti Singh.

How the System is Expected to Work

Under the proposed process, UTC will issue a dedicated WhatsApp number for ticket booking. Passengers who message the number will be prompted to enter their journey details, including route, destination and travel date.

Once the information is submitted, a QR code will be generated for fare payment. After completing the payment, passengers will receive a QR-based e-ticket directly on WhatsApp.

On board, conductors will scan the QR code or barcode using their ticketing device. The scan will instantly display the ticket details, creating an experience similar to digital metro ticketing systems already operating in several Indian cities.

Where It Will Be Available

Initially, the WhatsApp booking facility will only be available on buses that already support online reservations. Rather than replacing existing booking methods, it will serve as a third option alongside online booking and purchasing tickets directly from the conductor.

Discussions with the National Informatics Centre (NIC) are ongoing as UTC continues developing the platform. Officials are also working to resolve server-related technical issues affecting the corporation's existing booking infrastructure.

Why the Initiative Matters

UTC buses currently transport nearly 90,000 passengers every day across Uttarakhand. The proposed WhatsApp ticketing system follows recent directions from the state's Transport Minister to improve passenger convenience through digital services and modernize the Roadways booking experience.

If implemented, passengers will be able to book tickets, complete payments and receive digital QR-based tickets without downloading any additional mobile application, making the booking process faster and more accessible.

Current Status

As of July 12–13, 2026, the WhatsApp booking system remains in the planning and development stage. No official launch date has been announced, and the service is expected to begin only on selected buses that already support online ticket booking before any wider rollout.
