The Uttarakhand government plans to install more than 500 Earthquake Early Warning System (EEWS) sensors at different locations across the state to improve earthquake detection and preparedness.
So far, 169 sensors have already been installed, and around 128 are currently operational, though some occasionally stop working due to power and connectivity issues in remote areas.
The expansion of the sensor network is being carried out under the National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Programme (NERMP) to strengthen disaster management in earthquake-prone regions.
Many of the new sensors will be placed in seismically active Himalayan fault zones such as the Himalayan Frontal Thrust (HFT), Main Boundary Thrust (MBT), and Main Central Thrust (MCT).
The sensors will help detect earthquakes quickly and provide early warnings before strong tremors reach populated areas, giving authorities and residents a few seconds to take protective action and reduce damage.
