Left Front Faces Major Decline in Bihar Assembly Results

The combined Left front in Bihar witnessed a sharp setback in the latest Assembly elections, dropping from 16 seats in the previous House to just three this time. In the outgoing Assembly, the Left held a total of 16 MLAs — 11 from CPI(M-L) and two each from the CPI and CPM. However, in the current election, the CPI failed to secure even a single seat.
Early trends had briefly raised hopes for the Left, as it occasionally matched or even surpassed the Congress in leads. But as counting progressed, the final results placed the Left at only half of Congress’s tally, with the latter finishing at six seats.
This performance stands in stark contrast to the Left’s stronger showing in the 2020 Assembly polls, where it had won nine constituencies. CPI(M-L) had then secured victories in Balrampur, Ziradei, Darauli, Phulwari, Agiaon, Dumraon, Karakat, Arwal, and Ghosi. The CPM had claimed Manjhi and Bibhutipur, while the CPI won from Teghra and Bakhri.
The sharp decline this year marks a significant shift in Bihar’s political dynamics and poses new challenges for the Left front as it reassesses its strategy going forward.
