Mustang, Nepal: A large section of a mountainside collapsed into the Kali Gandaki River near Lete in Nepal's Mustang district, as days of heavy rain triggered floods and landslides across the Himalayan country. Video of the collapse, which has been widely shared online, shows the slope giving way in a matter of seconds.
What Happened
The footage, recorded near Lete, shows the hillside collapsing and sending a massive amount of debris into the river in about six seconds, as people watching can be heard screaming. The landslide partially obstructed the Kali Gandaki. A separate landslide in Chame, in neighbouring Manang district, also affected the Marsyangdi River. No casualties have been reported from the Lete landslide.
Floods Across Nepal
Three days of continuous heavy rain caused the Kali Gandaki to rise significantly, with damage reported from Mustang and Myagdi through Parbat and Syangja. Reports put the death toll from the latest floods at between 21 and 24, with at least 14 people missing. On Sunday, Nepali authorities warned of possible flash floods in 49 of the country's 77 districts.
Separately, at least four people were killed and others went missing when an avalanche struck the base camp of Himlung Himal, where Sherpas and support staff were preparing for an expedition.
The Kali Gandaki flows south into India, where it is known as the Gandak and runs through Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
