Volyn, Ukraine: A Russian Geran-5 jet-powered drone struck Ukrainian territory near the Yahodyn–Dorohusk border crossing with Poland on the afternoon of Monday, September 28, as Russian strikes continued across western Ukraine. The checkpoint was not directly hit, according to Ukraine's State Border Guard Service, but regional officials said the blast damaged its entrance building.
What Happened
Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said the drone struck about two kilometres from the crossing. Roman Romaniuk, head of the Volyn Oblast Military Administration, said the strike hit near the village of Starovoitove in Kovel district, and that the blast wave damaged the checkpoint building at the entrance to the terminal. No injuries or deaths were reported.
Video said to show the moment of the strike has been shared by local Ukrainian channels. The Commons Voice has not independently verified the footage.
Poland's Response
Polish military aircraft were scrambled in response to Russian drone attacks on western Ukraine. Kosiniak-Kamysz said Polish airspace was not violated during the attack.
Not the First Strike at Yahodyn
This is the second jet-drone strike near Yahodyn this month. On September 15, a Russian jet-powered drone hit a train engine at Yahodyn, about two kilometres from the Polish border. No one was killed. Russia's Defence Ministry has previously claimed strikes on the Yahodyn checkpoint, saying attacks on Ukrainian border crossings are aimed at disrupting ground supply routes for foreign military aid.
