The U.S. Navy intercepted and seized the Iranian-flagged cargo ship Touska near the Strait of Hormuz, marking the first such seizure since the American blockade began. President Trump stated the ship was "stopped in its tracks" after an engine room strike.
Iran’s military command labeled the seizure "piracy" and a violation of the existing ceasefire, which is set to expire on April 22. Tehran has warned of a "swift response" and signaled it may "reveal new cards" on the battlefield.
Despite the escalation, Vice President J.D. Vance is scheduled to lead a U.S. delegation to Islamabad for peace talks. Pakistan expressed confidence that Iran will participate, although Tehran has voiced deep skepticism following the recent naval action.
The standoff has shuttered the Strait of Hormuz, leaving over 1,600 vessels stranded. With roughly 20% of global oil trade passing through the waterway, the continued blockade has caused a surge in oil prices and a worsening global energy shortage.
