The Uttarakhand High Court has issued a stay on the felling of trees at the Municipal Post Graduate (MPG) College in Mussoorie, following reports of large-scale environmental clearing for construction activities.
The court highlighted the ecological importance of the local Oak (Quercus) species, noting that these trees are critical for groundwater recharge and maintaining the fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
The bench directed the Mussoorie Municipality and college authorities that no further trees are to be cut without explicit, prior permission from the court and relevant forest departments.
The ruling came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that alleged dozens of healthy trees were being axed to make way for new infrastructure, sparking an outcry among conservationists and local residents.
