The Arrest: Dehradun Police apprehended Gaurav Kumar, an Amritsar native, for running a high-profile scam where he impersonated Kanishk Singh, the personal secretary to Rahul Gandhi.
The Modus Operandi: The accused used technical deception, including fake Truecaller profiles and online data mining from political portals, to build credibility and target high-ranking politicians across Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Bihar.
Major Victims: The investigation was triggered by a complaint from Uttarakhand Congress leader Bhavana Pandey, who was allegedly duped of ₹25 lakh. Further interrogation revealed the suspect had previously defrauded leaders in Jaipur of ₹1.90 crore and a Patna-based politician of ₹3 lakh.
The Scam: Kumar and his three absconding associates lured victims by promising influential party positions or election tickets, often using fake "conference calls" with senior leaders to convince victims of their proximity to the party high command.
