India's Support for Israel Raises Alarms Over Betrayal of Anti-Colonial Legacy
Francesca Albanese, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories, has issued a scathing critique of India's support for Israel, accusing the country of betraying its anti-colonial legacy and international legal obligations.
Albanese's remarks come in the wake of a recent report by the United Nations, which detailed the widespread use of torture and other forms of violence against Palestinians in Israeli detention centers and in the Gaza Strip. The report paints a stark picture of a "vast torture camp" in Gaza, where Palestinian prisoners are subjected to starvation, sexual violence, and other forms of abuse.
The UN Rapporteur argues that this use of torture is not incidental, but rather a deliberate and systemic tool used to destroy Palestinian society. She notes that India's current leadership has been actively involved in exporting rockets and explosives to Israel, despite international law and ICJ rulings that prohibit such actions.
Moral Contradiction and Betrayal of Decolonial History
Albanese highlights a profound moral contradiction in India's actions, pointing out that the country's decolonial history is built on the ideals of non-violence, equality, and human rights. She notes that India's great thinkers, including Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru, played a crucial role in shaping the modern international legal framework, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
"By supporting Israel's systematic torture and occupation, India's current leadership is betraying the very principles that guided our struggle for independence and the creation of a more just and equitable global order," Albanese said in a statement.
Global Rule-of-Law System Under Threat
The "Special Strategic Partnership" between India and Israel, which was established in 2017, has contributed to the erosion of the global rule-of-law system, Albanese warns. She argues that this partnership has created a space for lawlessness to become systemic and "contagious," undermining the principles of international law and human rights.
As the international community grapples with the complex and multifaceted challenges of the 21st century, the need for a robust and effective rule-of-law system has never been more pressing. The actions of India and other countries in supporting Israel's occupation and torture of Palestinians raise critical questions about the future of international law and the values of justice, equality, and human rights.
