A St. Petersburg woman has become the first in Russia to give birth to identical quadruplet girls, a phenomenon so rare it has only happened roughly 15 times in recorded history.
Unlike most quadruplets which result from multiple eggs (often via IVF), these sisters are "monochorionic," meaning they all developed from a single fertilized egg that split four times.
The birth required an operating room packed with specialists to manage the high-risk delivery; the babies were born weighing between 1.3kg and 1.6kg.
Experts place the probability of such a birth at 1 in 15.5 million, making it one of the rarest reproductive events a human can experience.
Despite the immense physical toll of a quadruple pregnancy, doctors confirm that the mother and all four daughters are currently stable and under observation.
